 In Édouard Louis's novel A Woman's Battles and Transformations, when Eddy finds a photo of his mother as a 20-year-old young woman, he is moved to write the story of her entrapment, escape, and transformation. Studying the photo makes Eddy realize all of the ways in which Monique's life was dictated by her sex, her class, and her familial and marital circumstances. Written in a series of poetic fragments, the novel explores themes including entrapment, freedom, and happiness.
